Sodium sulfide is commercially produced through two main industrial processes - electrolysis and reaction of hydrogen sulfide and sodium hydroxide. The hydrogen sulfide reaction process involves bubbling hydrogen sulfide gas through a sodium hydroxide solution which results in the precipitation of sodium sulfide.

Once produced, Sodium Sulfide finds a diverse range of applications across industries. One of its largest uses is in the pulp and paper industry where it is used in the kraft process for production of wood pulp. During this process, sodium sulfide helps break down the lignin bonds in wood chips and converts them into individual cellulose fibers. This allows easy separation of fibers from wood materials. Sodium sulfide enables an efficient and economical method of producing paper from wood sources.

Another major application of sodium sulfide is in wastewater treatment plants. Here, it is used for removal of heavy metals like cadmium, copper, lead and zinc from industrial wastewaters through precipitation. Sodium sulfide reacts with heavy metals to form insoluble sulfide salts that are easy to separate. This allows treatment plants to efficiently treat metal-laden wastewaters from several industries before discharge.

Yet another use of sodium sulfide is in leather tanning. In this process, sodium sulfide helps break down collagen fibers in animal hides through hydrolysis. This softens the hides and allows better absorption of tanning agents. The end product is soft, durable leather used in shoes, automotive products and garments. Other Applications

Apart from the above major uses, sodium sulfide also finds applications in several other industries. In the mining sector, it is used as a flotation reagent to separate metal sulfides from ores during mineral processing. Sodium sulfide treatment helps minerals like copper, lead and zinc to float on water while gangue sinks, allowing easier separation.

Sodium sulfide also sees use as a dechlorinating agent especially for treatment of municipal and industrial effluents. It reacts with chlorinated organic compounds to remove chlorine, reducing toxicity. In the pulp industry, it acts as a reductant and pH regulator during ozone bleaching of paper pulp. Sodium sulfide also has some niche applications in manufacturing of dyes, pigments, wood preservatives and Matches.

In the chemical industry, sodium sulfide is used as a feedstock for production of several sulfur-containing chemicals through further processing. These derivatives include hydrogen sulfide, sodium hydrosulfide, sulfur and sodium thiosulfate which find diverse applications. The versatile reactivity of sodium sulfide allows downstream production of many useful industrial chemicals.

The global market for sodium sulfide was estimated at around 500 kilo tons in 2020 with a total market value exceeding 800 million USD. China dominates accounting for over 50% of global production capacity. Other major producing countries include Japan, United States and several European nations.

Demand comes both from integrated consumers within pulp/paper, wastewater treatment, mining and chemical sectors as well as from chemical distributors who supply various industries.
